Karlie Kloss And Joshua Kushner Were Worst Dressed At Met Gala
Looking like a mother trying to relive her glory days as she shuffles her gawky son off to junior prom, supermodel Karlie Kloss arrived at the Met Gala with Joshua Kushner by her side.
On Monday night the longtime couple, who married in October 2018, attended the annual high-profile fundraiser in New York City dressed in things they found in the trunk of their car (one imagines). The event, considered one of the biggest nights for fashion each year, was themed “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” based on the essay of the same name by Jewish thinker Susan Sontag.
The newlyweds achieved a style that might be called 1980’s frump: Kushner wore an ill-fitting tuxedo and a hypnotic, bleached grin, Kloss sported a ream of what looked like spray-painted aluminum foil attached to bouffant sateen sleeves.
We will not hold these people’s relations or in-laws against them. What we will hold against them is their refusal to show up aesthetically at the biggest posthumous honor of Susan Sontag to date.
“The two pioneering forces of modern sensibility are Jewish seriousness and homosexual aestheticism and irony,” Sontag wrote. Here, we see, at best, extremely heterosexual irony. Kloss, a major supermodel and a judge on the fashion design TV show “Project Runway,” failed to understand the prompt. Kushner, who is so well-heeled that he simply walked into Harvard in his father’s shoes, ignored it.
“Intelligence is really a kind of taste,” Sontag wrote. “Taste in ideas.”
Kushner and Kloss have punctuated their relationship with occasional forays into the world of activism. And Kloss, for her part, is personally responsible for providing young girls with coding skills, for free. But hear us now and hear us well, Kloss-Kushners: You represent the Jews now. So when you go to themed fundraisers for museums, show a little respect.
