A Note of Welcome

It is my pleasure to welcome two new journalists to the Forward’s newsroom. You’ve seen Paul Berger’s byline on news and arts stories as a freelancer; he now joins the Forward as a full-time staff writer. A native of Leeds, England, Paul has served as the New York correspondent for the Jewish Chronicle; written for many other publications including the New York Times; and authored eight books. He is also a serious student of Russian language and culture, a real asset in covering the burgeoning Russian Jewish story in America and beyond.

Our new Forward Fellow for news is Naomi Zeveloff. The fellowship is a one-year program designed for young Jewish journalists of great talent and potential. And Naomi certainly has both. She worked for several years at independent weekly newspapers in Denver and Dallas before entering the master’s of arts program at the Columbia School of Journalism. Naomi’s thesis, on economic resurgence in Ramallah, was awarded the prize for best thesis at this year’s graduation.

I am also pleased to welcome three new columnists to our oped page. Eric Alterman writes for the Nation and Center for American Progress, and he just won a major award for excellence in media industry reporting from the Newhouse School. David Hazony, who writes about religion and politics from Israel, recently published “The Ten Commandments,” which is now also available in Hebrew. And historian Deborah Lipstadt, a longtime friend of the Forward, joins our regular lineup from Emory University, where her most recent book, “Eichmann on Trial,” continues to receive much praise.

We aim to provide the most insightful, surprising and provocative opinion writing about the Jewish world, and these superb writers and thinkers help us fulfill that mission. Join the conversation.
