Shearith Israel’s Condo Plan Shot Down by Manhattan Board

A plan for a nine-story condo and community center adjacent to Shearith Israel, the venerable Sephardic congregation on Manhattan’s upper West Side, was shot down by a local community board.

The plan, which is opposed by preservationists in the tony neighborhood, must now go to a city board for approval or rejection, reported DNAInfo.com.

A lawyer for the congregation on West 70th Street and Central Park West said he was still optimistic the plan would eventually get the green light.

“(We) are hopeful that the synagogue will receive the approvals needed to allow for development of its Community House,” Zachary Bernstein, the attorney, told the web site.
