5 Australian Jews Hurt in ‘Anti-Semitic’ Brawl

Five people were hospitalized in Sydney on Saturday after a brawl was sparked by anti-Semitic insults, Australian media reported.

According to The Australian newspaper, a group of about eight young men, some teenagers, began yelling “derogatory comments” shortly after midnight at the adults, who, according to ABC news, were on their way home from synagogue in Bondi.

The eight physically assaulted the four men, aged 66, 48, 39 and 27, and the 62-year-old woman, and a melee played out until police arrived, The Australian reported.

“All five people in the older group were injured, suffering concussion, a fractured cheekbone, possible broken nose, lacerations and bruising. They were taken to St Vincent’s Hospital,” the report said.

The hospital’s spokesman, David Faktor, said the victims told him that the attack was unprovoked and that they were targeted because they were Jewish, The Australian reported.
