October 19-28: The Forward celebrates 123 years of activism

“Activism in the Five Boroughs” The Forward’s newest collaboration with Urban Archive, the city’s award winning digital mapping platform for storytelling, hits its activist stride next week with this new series focused on social justice.

Kicking off from 10/19 – 10/28, the history series, was inspired by calls for meaningful change over the past few months that are not just part of history. To this day, activists, organizers, and leaders in our city are working tirelessly to ensure a better future, which is something The Forward knows a bit about.

We were thrilled to be invited to participate alongside some of the city’s top historical organizations like the New York Historical Society, the Center for Brooklyn History and community archiving project, Queen’s Memory . Equally, we’re excited to help launch “Activism in the Five Boroughs,” a series that highlights the tireless work of the activists who have made our city what is today. We invite you to check out The Forward’s archival stories as well as those of our partners at Center for Brooklyn History, New-York Historical Society, and Queens Memory and help celebrate the protests, activists, and sites that have changed New York for the better.

In the words of host organization, Urban Archive: “It’s inspiring to see these incredible organizations working side-by-side on Urban Archive to reflect on the city’s rich history of social justice.” For 123 years—and counting— of our news publishing in gerangl (in the struggle as we say in Yiddish), we couldn’t agree more.

A message from our CEO & publisher Rachel Fishman Feddersen

I hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, I’d like to ask you to please support the Forward’s award-winning, nonprofit journalism during this critical time.

At a time when other newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall and invested additional resources to report on the ground from Israel and around the U.S. on the impact of the war, rising antisemitism and polarized discourse.

Readers like you make it all possible. Support our work by becoming a Forward Member and connect with our journalism and your community.
