The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations is an organization made up of 51 national Jewish groups meant to provide a forum for those groups to come together and develop a consensus voice among major Jewish institutions. The CoP was founded in 1956 at the behest of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who wanted a more efficient way to engage the Jewish community, whose political influence was steadily strengthening at the time. The CoP maintains significant political influence and is dedicated to supporting Israeli and American interests. In recent years, it has supported efforts to pressure Iran into halting its nuclear program.

Malcolm Hoenlein has served as executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations since 1986. He also continues to serve as the founding executive director of the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York. He has extensive experience in political activism and international relations. In May 2008, former President George W. Bush invited Hoenlein to join an honorary delegation to Jerusalem for Israel’s 60th anniversary celebration.
