The American Israel Public Affairs Committee is one of the most influential lobbying groups in Washington, D.C., and is primarily concerned with promoting better ties between the United States and Israel through addressing shared national security concerns. Isaiah L. Kenan founded AIPAC as a lobbying division of the American Zionist Council in 1951. AIPAC claims to have more than 100,000 members as part of its grassroots network. The group asserts that a strong relationship between Israel and the United States is mutually advantageous. Its yearly national convention attracts upwards of 10,000 attendees from across the United States.

Howard Kohr has served as the executive director of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee since 1996. The son of a holocaust survivor, Kohr has advocated for Israel in a number of capacities. He previously served as deputy director of the National Jewish Coalition, assistant Washington representative of the American Jewish Committee, and as a management fellow for the Department of Defense. He had served in a variety of staff positions at AIPAC prior to becoming executive director.
