How The Forward Community Responded To Our Sebastian Gorka Story

Last Thursday, the Forward published an exclusive report on Sebastian Gorka’s ties to the Vitézi Rend, a Hungarian far-right group that allied with the Nazis during World War II. The story went viral on social media, and the hashtag #gorkamustgo has been used thousands of times in the last week.

If you’ve been off of Twitter this week or are still catching up on this story, check out some of the highlights below:

Rep. Jerry Nadler tweeted the Forward’s article multiple times, and also shared several follow-up stories.

Nadler then wrote a letter to President Trump, asking him to clarify Gorka’s membership in the group.

Rep. Ted Deutch, a Florida Democrat, also tweeted the story. A third congressman, David Cicilline, told BuzzFeed News, “I’m angered, but not at all surprised.”

Senators Richard Blumenthal, Ben Cardin and Dick Durbin wrote a letter to the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department, asking them to examine Gorka’s immigration papers.

Journalists from a wide range of outlets took note of the story. Ben Smith, Buzzfeed’s editor-in-chief (and a former Forward intern) called it an “amazing scoop.”

The story was also picked up by reporters and editors from NBC News, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Yahoo, Think Progress, and even the Toronto Star.

Other tweets chose to look at the irony of President Trump’s apparent decision not to use “extreme vetting” with his own staff.

More interested in Hollywood than Washington? Michael Ian Black was one of a number of actors that got in on the fun.
