Celebrate Pride Month With Rainbow Food, With A Jewish Twist
It’s June, the most magical month of the year. Happy Pride to all the Ls and Gs and Bs and Ts out there, and a very happy Ikea summer sale to the straights!
Here are some Jewish pride recipes that any one of you allies or friends beyond the binary can cook. It’s time to stock up on sprinkles and food coloring, because these recipes will be going hard on the rainbow theme. Now, I know you’re going to be busy being gay this month, so I’ve pruned the recipe list to only the bare necessities, the finest the wildlands of the Internet has to offer us.
Let’s start with my hot tip of the hour, which is this: Put rainbow sprinkles on absolutely everything. Ice cream, bagels and babka. No one and nothing is exempt. Feed it to everyone.
There’s rainbow challah. Joseph and the Technicolor Challah, here we come. Queers get to eat first, no exceptions.
Rainbow bagels, anyone? Stop, take the Tide pod out of your mouth and bite down on something equally colorful: A bagel festooned with all the glorious colors of the rainbow.
There’s this Birthday Cake Babka, which is really rainbow babka, which is really Pride babka. Visually, it’s a winner, and taste-wise, it’s a champion.
Don’t forget about the rainbow falafel. And rainbow latkes. You get the idea.
And there’s rainbow cabbage salad with tahini-lemon dressing (h/t to Mayim Bialik). (Yes, I know what you’re thinking, and you’re right. Cabbage is the food that rioters first ate at Stonewall while battling for their rights.)
It’s time to make dinner a bit more colorful and hence a bit more gay.
Happy Pride month from the Forward!
