NYC Health Department Shuts Down ‘Fine & Shapiro’ Deli For Violating Health Codes

At 138 West 72nd St, in the Jewish enclave of the Upper West Side, kosher restaurant Fine & Shapiro, open since 1927 as one of the city’s oldest kosher delis, was closed by New York City’s Department of Health.
Here are some of the health codes it violated, as per the West Side Rag:
1) Hot food item not held at or above 140º F.
2) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
3) Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.
4) Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any activity when contamination may have occurred.
5) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.
6) Pesticide use not in accordance with label or applicable laws. Prohibited chemical used/stored. Open bait station used.
It wasn’t just Fine & Shapiro that went to its doom. Polpette and Tum & Yum also went gently into the dark night. For now, that is.
We’ll be waiting for the deli’s announcement that we can once again eat pickles and corned beef, mice-free.
