The Best New Kosher Restaurants In New York

Here are the nominees for the Forward Food Choice Award for best new kosher restaurant in New York. Learn more about the awards and vote for your favorites here.

Bison & Bourbon

Located in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn, Bison & Bourbon, which opened in May 2016, is housed in what used to be a sprawling Turkish café (and, before that, it was a 1920s-era warehouse). The two-level space’s ambiance is a rarity in kosher cuisine, replete with a lounge, an outdoor garden and fully stocked bar. This steakhouse, certified kosher by the OK, also specializes in a bar-style small-bites menu that includes fried brisket wontons and street tacos.

Dean Street Cafe

Dean Street Cafe, which opened back in January 2017, is a kosher artisan coffee shop. Using its own house-made brand of coffee, Crown Heights Roasting Company, Dean Street roasts its single-origin beans in-house. In addition to baked goods like croissants, the café also sells classic brunch items including shakshuka and grilled cheese. Located in Crown Heights, Dean Street Café is certified kosher by the OK.

Marani

Located in Rego Park, Queens, Marani is the first Georgian kosher restaurant offering up classic Eurasian foods like adjapsandali (a spreadable eggplant salad) and khachapuri (Georgian bread). Certified by the Vaad Harabonim of Queens, Marani has two sections: Upstairs serves meat dishes and downstairs serves dairy, allowing customers to experience the full breadth of Georgian cuisine.

NY Brat Factory

Opening its doors in May 2016, this fast casual dining spot has quickly established itself as a kosher sausage mecca. On a warm, sunny day, the outdoor seating provides the perfect setting for a sit-down lunch, but most customers choose takeout. The varied menu also includes classic Southern barbecue fare such as fried pickles, fried green tomato and deep-fried oreos. NY Brat Factory is certified by the Star-K and also provides catering for events.

Russ & Daughters At The Jewish Museum

While Russ & Daughters other café and its appetizing shop are not kosher, last year the venerable institution opened up a kosher venue in the basement of the Upper East Side’s Jewish Museum. Like the others, this Russ & Daughters offers a large variety of smoked fish, bagels and other classic Ashkenazic Jewish fare. And you can make a reservation for a pre-paid set-menu for Saturday, allowing the observant to enjoy a restaurant meal for Shabbos lunch.
