L.A. Losing Solley’s and All the Weekly Dish

So Long, Solley’s

Craving some brisket or matzo-ball soup from Solley’s in L.A.? Get there fast. The Sherman Oaks eatery will close June 6 after more than 50 years on the same corner, according to the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. A rent increase is to blame.

Now owned by the chain, Solley’s “has scores of loyal customers who have eaten there for years — not to mention some 65 employees, many of whom have been with the company for at least a decade,” reports SFVBJ.

Half a dozen Jerry’s Famous Delis locations have closed since the opening of its flagship store in 1978.

(Jewish) Food TV

What is it with watching goyim eat Jewish food? First, Buzzfeed uploaded its Jewish Food Taste Test series. Then, bearded social-media nudnik Meir Kalmanson released his version, the Ultimate Chassidic Food Taste Test, regaling his cast with schmaltz herring and kugel, ShalomLife reports.

Now, black news site Yardhype tops them both with the raucous Black People Try Jewish Food for the First Time.

Warning: Descriptions of foods like gefilte fish are kind of NSFO.

Dinner Is Beamed

An Israeli couple has invented a real-life Star Trek “food replicator,” Reuters reports. About the size of a coffee maker, The Genie can produce an unlimited variety of meals using pods, which contain natural dehydrated ingredients, Reuters says. The whole shebang takes 30 seconds.

Entrepreneurs Ayelet Carasso and Doron Marco conceived of the patent-registered device and pods, “when they struggled to find restaurants that delivered to their office during a late-night working session.”

“The dish can be anything, it can be a meal like chicken with rice, like couscous with vegetable or an amazing ramen or even a chocolate soufflé or any other desert that you want,” Carasso told Reuters.

Israeli Restaurant Tops GQ Food and Drink List for London

Israeli-owned hotspot The Palomar has been named London’s top restaurant for 2015 by GQ, which doled out its inaugural Food and Drink Awards at a splashy ceremony last week. The Palomar is the sister restaurant of Jerusalem’s acclaimed Machneyuda. The Forward reported on the Palomar’s rising heat back in March.
