Adam Schiff Warns Whitaker: ‘You Will Be Called To Answer’
Rep. Adam Schiff vowed on Sunday that he would hold acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker accountable, should he derail special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, The Hill reported.
Schiff added in the interview on NBC that there are “very strong” facts proving that Whitaker shouldn’t even be overseeing the probe.
“This is someone who’s made repeated and prejudicial comments against the investigation,” said the California congressman. “Someone who has made false statements about it, claiming that the Russians really had no impact on our election. It’s someone who has a relationship with one of the important witnesses in the investigation.”
If Whitaker doesn’t recuse himself, Schiff continued, Democrats, who now have control of the House, are prepared to challenge him, according to Business Insider. If he interferes in the investigation, “Mr. Whitaker needs to understand that he will be called to answer,” Schiff said. “Any role that he plays will be exposed to the public. We don’t want there to be any ambiguity about that.”
Whitaker said that he doesn’t plan to step away from the case, the Washington Post reported last week. He added that if President Trump doesn’t wish to have a sit-down interview, he would block Mueller from subpoenaing him.
Trump tapped Whitaker for the position last week after forcing out Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
