Kushner Firm In $70K Food Fight With Brooklyn Italian Restaurant
Jared Kushner’s real estate firm is tied up in a legal fight with a Brooklyn Italian eatery that claims the company has failed to upkeep the property and cost the restaurant business.
The owners of La Nonna, located on 184 Kent Avenue in hipster Williamsburg, started withholding their rent to Kushner Co. back in February over their complaints, and were subsequently sued and threatened with eviction if they didn’t cough up more than $70,000 in back rent.
La Nonna’s proprietors explain their refusal to pay as a response to three issues – scaffolding around the building that prevents al fresco dining, excessive noise from construction on the building and a failure to repair water damage in the restaurant. La Nonna is part of a huge block0ling complex which includes hundreds of luxury units and which Kushner Co. purchased for $275 million.
Kushner has stepped away from an active role in the family real estate business, while he serves as White House senior adviser to father-in-law President Trump. But his real estate practices have come under fierce scrutiny from the press, including allegations that his company exploits low-income tenants.
