Trump Vows Peace Push After Meeting Abbas — But Scant Details

President Donald Trump told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday he was committed to working with Israelis and Palestinians to reach a peace agreement, but he offered no clues about how he would break the deadlock between the two sides.

Trump, appearing with Abbas at the White House, told reporters about the peace deal, “We will get this done.”

Abbas, speaking through a translator, said Palestinians were committed to a peace agreement that would create two separate states based on the 1967 borders.

Trump said he believes Israelis and Palestinians are both willing to make a peace deal, adding that he does not think it will be as difficult as people thought.

“It’s … something that I think is frankly maybe not as difficult as people have thought over the years,” Trump said at the beginning of a lunch with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and senior U.S. and Palestinian leaders. “But we need two willing parties. We believe Israel is willing, we believe you’re willing, and if you both are willing, we’re going to make a deal.”
