Trump Refuses To Back Steve Bannon In Feud With Jared Kushner
“I like Steve, but you have to remember he was not involved in my campaign until very late,” Trump said when asked by a New York Post reporter if he still felt confidence in Bannon.
“I had already beaten all the senators and all the governors, and I didn’t know Steve….It wasn’t like I was going to change strategies,” the president said.
Trump seemed to hint that Bannon was less instrumental in orchestrating his surprise victory against Hillary Clinton in November.
Kushner, husband of Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump, is believed to be trying to tug the president into a more mainstream position, while Bannon is trying to keep aflame the nationalist fervor.
“Steve is a good guy, but I told them to straighten it out or I will,” he said last week.
Bannon and Kushner met on Friday at the request of White House chief of staff Reince Priebus who told them to thrash out their differences.
