April 8: Manhattan: Yiddish Tour Of ‘Lost & Found – A Family Photo Album’
The Yiddish Forward (Forverts) is excited to co-present a tour of the exhibition “Lost & Found – A Family Photo Album” on Monday, April 8 at the Yeshiva University Museum in Manhattan.
Join Yiddish literature scholar Ruth Wisse as she leads the one-hour tour in Yiddish, sharing the remarkable story of a pre-war family album that belonged to a woman — Wisse’s aunt — who was deported from the Kovno Ghetto in 1943. The album was hidden for three generations by a non-Jewish Lithuanian family and discovered in 2013. Three years later, it was finally returned to the original owner’s descendants.
The album’s 113 photographs, displayed together for the first time, evoke the Jewish cultural life that flourished in the urban centers of Eastern Europe between the wars.
The tour, also presented by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, will begin at 6:30 p.m. The exhibit will run through April 28.
