‘I Love Dick,’ And More To Read, Watch, And Do This Weekend

Jill Soloway’s show “Transparent” has been an audience and critic favorite; on Friday, the Jewish director’s new series, “I Love Dick,” will premiere on Amazon Prime. The show stars Kathryn Hahn, who also plays Rabbi Raquel Fein on “Transparent.” Hahn spoke to JTA about the challenges and opportunities of being a non-Jew playing a rabbi last spring; read that interview here.

It’s also a good week for film, with both Rama Burshtein’s “The Wedding Plan” and Maria Schrader’s documentary “Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe” hitting theaters. Curt Schleier spoke with Burshtein about the film, in which a young Orthodox woman tries to find love in the month leading up to her pre-scheduled wedding, for the Forward. Read about her own thoughts on marriage, feminism, and more, here.

In New York City, if previous bad TV takes on Bernie Madoff’s notorious Ponzi scheme haven’t soured your taste for the story, attend a preview screening of HBO’s upcoming “Wizard of Lies” with stars Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, as well as an array of the show’s producers and directors. If you want to be swept away, look to Randy Weiner and Ryan Heffington’s new immersive production “Seeing You.” Details on the piece are scant — it has something to do with Hoboken in the 1940s, and that’s about all we know — but given Weiner’s previous success co-producing “Sleep No More,” it should be worth a trip. And last but not least, spare some time for choreographer Tamar Rogoff’s “Grand Rounds” at La Mama.

In Los Angeles, if you’re a podcast fan, spend Friday night at a performance of “Radiotopia Live” featuring, among other’s, Helen Zaltzman’s “The Allusionist.” On Sunday, The New Yorker’s Ariel Levy will discuss her recent memoir “The Rules Do Not Apply” with Maggie Nelson, author of the much-lauded “The Argonauts,” at the Skirball Center. And Monday night, catch comedian Daniel Weingarten at Hollywood Improv.

In Washington D.C., start the weekend off artistically at the Friday opening reception for Jill Tanenbaum’s exhibit “Textures in Glass” at the Waverly Street Gallery. On Saturday afternoon, head to the National Gallery to hear the petite winners of this year’s Joseph and Goldie Feder Memorial String Competition, open to students in grades 6-12. And Sunday, don’t miss acclaimed pianist Murray Perahia at the Music Center at Strathmore, where he’ll perform works by Bach, Schubert, Mozart and Beethoven.

In Chicago, indulge in Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” at the Lyric Opera. And head to City Winery on Monday to hear clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen perform with Trio Brasileiro.
