How Much Are Our Jewish Non-Profit CEOs Making?
The Forward’s sixth annual survey of Jewish non-profit leaders is presented here as a public service. The information on salary, revenue and the like is supposed to be available to everyone — that’s part of the civic contract charities make in exchange for not paying taxes — but nowhere else will you find this level of detail, analysis and context.
Please use it wisely. It should inform your personal giving and communal activism. I hope it will also continue to spur reforms and a movement toward greater equity between men and women, which is so far in short supply. Women leaders can still expect to earn only 81 cents to every dollar that male CEOs earn, and that takes into account the size of their respective organizations. That this salary gap persists in 2014 is an embarrassment to our community.
I want to pay special tribute to Maia Efrem, the Forward’s research editor, who managed this project from start to finish, a task months in the making, with diligence and extraordinary attention to detail. She was assisted by Rachel Benaim, Yael Even-Or and Gabe Friedman.
We are all grateful to Dr. Abraham Wyner and his team from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for their analysis of this data.
And we thank the many charity executives and their staffs who helped us verify the information. This work is predicated on the belief that transparency is a public good. It’s a value we all can share.
